A.E. Köchert Ausstellung in Schloss Gödöllő

Inspiring conversation instead of competition. Each stone holding its own shade of violet, each one catching the light differently. Together they form a quiet harmony - strong, feminine, and entirely unique.

One of the most legendary diamonds ever reappeared: the famous Florentine Diamond, set in its original head ornament for Emperor Franz Stephan. Having been asked to confirm the authenticity and been part of its rediscovery in Canada strikes us with awe. Other breathtaking pieces of the Imperial family’s private jewels should be inspected along with it.
Four Köchert pieces are among the collection of about 15 pieces: a diamond and pearl devant-de-corsage of Empress Elisabeth, two head ornaments - a bow shaped hairpin and an aigrette - in the Hungarian colours featuring rubies, emeralds and diamonds. They were created and adapted for Elisabeth’s and Franz Joseph’s coronation as king and queen of Hungary in 1867.
The star among the four is an emerald watch, dating back to Empress Maria Theresia. The watch is set inside of a facetted emerald in the size of a chicken egg. Unparalleled. The chatelaine holding it was made by the House of Köchert at the same time as the famous Emerald Suite for Empress Elisabeth to fit the new ensemble.
Among the collection are not only yellow sapphire brooches and Toison d`Or decorations but also another watch by the famous watch maker Jean-Antoine Lepine once having belonged to Queen Marie Antoinette. It features a mysterious lock of hair. Maybe from King Louis XVI., or one of the royal children? Or even from a lover?
All the pieces hold outstanding historic significance and have lived quite a turbulent past in more than one respect. Most of them all probably those of Marie Antoinette having escaped the turmoil of the French revolution. Also, the giant walnut sized briolett shaped Florentiner has a mysterious history.
Many rumours existed about the jewel’s fate. Now we know that Empress Zita took the jewels with her fleeing from the Nazis to exile in Canada. Shortly before her death she stated their existence mustn’t be made public before the 100th anniversary of the death of her husband Charles. To ensure the future of the collection as a unit of historical importance, the family now decided to establish a Canadian foundation, where the pieces found their new home.
